Electrical Licensing in Gainesville city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who installs, constructs, maintains, or repairs electrical systems in buildings or structures must hold a valid Florida electrical license. This includes work on wiring, equipment, and apparatus used to generate, transform, transmit, distribute, or utilize electrical energy.
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means a person who undertakes for another the installation, construction, maintenance, or repair of electrical systems. The work is regulated regardless of whether it is performed for compensation or as part of a larger project.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Meet Experience Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the experience qualifications set forth in Fla. Stat. § 489.113. This typically requires:
- 4 years of experience working under the direction of a licensed electrical contractor, OR
- Equivalent combinations of technical education and supervised experience (details in § 489.113)
Step 2: Obtain Exam Authorization
Apply through the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The Board administers licensing for electrical contractors throughout Florida.
Step 3: Pass the Electrical Contractor Exam
You must pass the state examination administered by CILB, which tests knowledge of electrical codes, safety standards, and Florida law.
Step 4: Apply for Your License
Submit your application and exam results to CILB. Upon approval, you receive your Florida electrical contractor license, valid statewide.
Military Credit: Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides that relevant military training and education may be credited toward experience requirements. If applicable, document your military service record when applying.
Local Requirements
Gainesville is located in Alachua County, Florida. Before performing electrical work in the city, you must obtain a local permit from the Gainesville Building Department.
Consult the Gainesville Municipal Code for any additional local amendments, permitting procedures, or inspection requirements beyond state law. Contact the Gainesville Building Department to confirm current local regulations and permit application procedures.
State law preempts most local licensing requirements, but municipalities may impose additional permitting, inspection, or bonding conditions. Check with the city before beginning work.
Exemptions
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing:
- Maintenance and repair of existing residential wiring by the property owner (not for compensation)
- Installation of low-voltage systems (under 50 volts) in some contexts
- Work performed by full-time employees of the property owner when working solely on that owner's property
- Other exemptions as specified in § 489.103
Exemptions are narrowly construed. When in doubt, obtain a license and permit.
