Electrical Licensing in Mexico Beach city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical construction, installation, alteration, or repair work in Mexico Beach must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Fla. Stat. § 489.105 defines electrical work as the installation, construction, alteration, servicing, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment. This includes wiring, circuits, fixtures, appliances, and related apparatus. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 establishes that only licensed contractors may lawfully perform this work.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Determine Your License Category
Florida issues three electrical contractor license types: Certified Electrician, Certified Electrical Contractor, and Licensed Electrical Contractor. Your category depends on experience and scope of work.

Step 2: Meet Qualifications
Fla. Stat. § 489.113 requires applicants to demonstrate competency through work experience in electrical construction under a licensed contractor. Specific hour requirements vary by license type. If you have relevant military training, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 may grant you credit toward experience requirements.

Step 3: Pass the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board Exam
The Fla. Stat. § 489.107 Construction Industry Licensing Board administers the electrical contractor examination. You must pass this exam before licensure.

Step 4: Apply Through CILB
Submit your application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) with proof of experience, exam passage, and any required fees. CILB processes all statewide contractor licenses.

Step 5: Maintain Your License
Renewals are required periodically and may include continuing education requirements.

Local Requirements

Mexico Beach operates under Mexico Beach Municipal Code. Before beginning any electrical work in the city, you must obtain a permit from the Mexico Beach Building Department. Contact the Mexico Beach Building Department for specific permit procedures, fees, and any local amendments to state electrical requirements.

Bay County may also have overlay requirements. Verify with the Mexico Beach Building Department whether county or municipal code provisions apply to your project.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements, including:
- Maintenance and repair work performed by a property owner on their own property (with limitations)
- Work performed by utility companies on their own systems
- Specific low-voltage and specialized installations as defined by statute

Review the statute directly to confirm whether your work qualifies for exemption.
