Sewer/Water Licensing in Mexico Beach city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who contracts to construct, repair, or maintain public or private water and sewer systems in Mexico Beach must hold a valid Florida Construction Industry License in the sewer and water contractor classification. This applies to work involving potable water lines, wastewater collection lines, treatment systems, and related infrastructure. [Fla. Stat. § 489.105]
The license requirement applies when work is performed for compensation or when the person holds themselves out as qualified to perform such work, regardless of whether they are employed by a contractor or operate independently.
How to Get Licensed
1. Meet qualifications:
You must demonstrate four years of experience in sewer and water construction work within the 10 years preceding application, or equivalent combination of education and experience. [Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
2. Pass the Construction Industry Licensing Board exam:
Apply with the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which administers licensing statewide. [Fla. Stat. § 489.107] You must pass the contractor examination for the sewer and water classification.
3. Submit application and fees:
Complete the CILB application with proof of experience, pass a background check, and pay the required licensing fee.
The CILB processes applications and maintains the statewide license registry. Contact the CILB directly through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) for current application procedures, exam schedules, and fees.
Local Requirements
In Mexico Beach, all construction work—including sewer and water projects—requires a local building permit issued by the Mexico Beach Building Department prior to starting work. [Mexico Beach Municipal Code]
Contractors must pull permits through the city before beginning any sewer or water work. Contact the Mexico Beach Building Department to determine specific local permit requirements, fees, and inspection schedules.
Review the Mexico Beach Municipal Code for any local amendments or additional requirements beyond state law.
Exemptions
The following are exempt from licensing requirements:
- Employees of the City of Mexico Beach performing work on municipal sewer and water systems [Fla. Stat. § 489.103]
- Owners performing work on their own property (with limitations) [Fla. Stat. § 489.103]
- Work performed by licensed utility companies under regulatory authority [Fla. Stat. § 489.103]
Exemptions are narrowly construed. If you question whether your work qualifies for exemption, consult the CILB or an attorney before proceeding without a license.
