Engineering Licensing in Hampton, Florida

Who Needs a License

Work that constitutes "practice of engineering" in Florida requires licensure under state law. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means any service or creative work requiring engineering education, training, and experience—including design, analysis, and supervision of construction. This applies in Hampton unless a specific exemption applies.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board enforces these requirements statewide and governs engineering licensure across Florida, including Bradford County where Hampton is located (Fla. Stat. § 489.107).

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Education and Experience Requirements

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Hold a professional engineer license from another state (reciprocity), OR
- Have completed an ABET-accredited engineering degree plus relevant work experience, OR
- Meet alternative documented education and experience paths specified in § 489.113

Step 2: Apply to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board

Submit your application to the state licensing board. The board reviews qualifications and administers the professional engineer (PE) exam.

Step 3: Pass the PE Exam

Pass the Florida Professional Engineer examination or equivalent.

Step 4: Obtain Your License

Upon approval, you receive your Florida Professional Engineer license. This is a state license; it is valid in Hampton without additional state endorsement.

Military Credit

If you have relevant military training or education in engineering, you may qualify for credit toward licensure requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.1131. Document your military credentials when applying.

Local Requirements

Hampton is governed by the Hampton Municipal Code, available at https://library.municode.com/fl/hampton. Review this code for any local ordinances regarding building permits, project notifications, or municipal engineer approvals before beginning work.

Contact the Hampton Building Department for:
- Local permitting requirements
- Site-specific inspections
- Any amendments to state law adopted by the city

Bradford County may also have county-level requirements. Confirm with both the city and county before commencing engineering work.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensure:
- An officer or employee of a public utility regulated by the Florida Public Service Commission, while engaged in work for that utility
- An officer or employee of a municipality, county, state, or federal agency, while engaged in official duties
- Any person engaged in design or engineering work that does not constitute "practice of engineering" under § 489.105
