Electrical Licensing in Cape Canaveral, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who performs electrical work in Cape Canaveral must hold an active electrical license issued by the State of Florida. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" includes the design, installation, alteration, repair, or maintenance of electrical systems, equipment, and devices that are part of a building or structure. This includes wiring, panels, fixtures, and related components. Work performed for compensation or as part of a business operation requires licensure, regardless of scope.
How to Get Licensed
Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To qualify for an electrical license:
-
Meet experience requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: typically 8,000 hours of documented electrical work experience over at least 4 years, or equivalent combinations of education and apprenticeship.
-
Complete the state examination: Apply through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). You must pass the Florida Electrical Contractor or Electrician exam, depending on your license classification.
-
Military service credit: If applicable, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements.
-
Submit application to DBPR: Include proof of experience, exam passage, workers' compensation insurance (where required), and any required fees.
The state board issues the license; it is not issued locally. Allow 4–6 weeks for processing after submission.
Local Requirements
Cape Canaveral requires all electrical work to be permitted through the Cape Canaveral Building Department before work begins. A valid state electrical license must be presented at permit issuance.
Review the Cape Canaveral Municipal Code for local amendments, permit fees, inspection schedules, and any city-specific requirements that may exceed state standards. Local amendments may apply to residential, commercial, or industrial electrical work.
Contact the Cape Canaveral Building Department to obtain current local permit requirements and fee schedules.
Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain electrical work is exempt from licensing requirements, including:
- Low-voltage systems (certain alarm and communication systems)
- Maintenance and repair of existing equipment by the property owner (residential only, specific limitations apply)
- Certain agricultural installations
- Installation of equipment by licensed manufacturers for their own use
Review the statute for complete exemption criteria, as limitations apply to each category.
