Electrical Licensing in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical work in Cape Canaveral must hold an active electrical license issued by the State of Florida. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" includes the design, installation, alteration, repair, or maintenance of electrical systems, equipment, and devices that are part of a building or structure. This includes wiring, panels, fixtures, and related components. Work performed for compensation or as part of a business operation requires licensure, regardless of scope.

How to Get Licensed

Electrical licensing in Florida is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To qualify for an electrical license:

  1. Meet experience requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: typically 8,000 hours of documented electrical work experience over at least 4 years, or equivalent combinations of education and apprenticeship.

  2. Complete the state examination: Apply through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). You must pass the Florida Electrical Contractor or Electrician exam, depending on your license classification.

  3. Military service credit: If applicable, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements.

  4. Submit application to DBPR: Include proof of experience, exam passage, workers' compensation insurance (where required), and any required fees.

The state board issues the license; it is not issued locally. Allow 4–6 weeks for processing after submission.

Cape Canaveral requires all electrical work to be permitted through the Cape Canaveral Building Department before work begins. A valid state electrical license must be presented at permit issuance.
