Contractor Licensing in Cocoa Beach city, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, construction trades are regulated under the Construction Industry Licensing Board. A contractor license is required for anyone who contracts to perform construction work—including construction, remodeling, repair, alteration, or demolition of buildings and structures—if the total contract price is $1,000 or more [Fla. Stat. § 489.105].

The specific trades regulated include:
- General Contractors
- Electrical Contractors
- Plumbing Contractors
- HVAC Contractors
- Roofing Contractors
- Building Contractors
- Residential Contractor (for projects under $800,000)
- And other specialty trades

If you are contracting work in Cocoa Beach valued at $1,000 or more, you must hold an active, valid license issued by the state of Florida.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
You must demonstrate competency through examination and experience [Fla. Stat. § 489.111]. Specific requirements vary by trade, but generally include:
- Documented work experience in the trade (typically 4+ years for general contractor)
- Proof of financial responsibility and workers' compensation insurance
- A passing score on the state licensing examination

Step 2: Apply to the State
Apply directly to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Division of Construction Industry Licensing. The application requires proof of experience, insurance, and exam passage.

Step 3: Pass the Examination
Each trade has a separate exam covering industry standards, safety codes, and business practices [Fla. Stat. § 489.111].

Step 4: Receive State License
Once approved, you receive your Florida contractor license, which is valid statewide, including in Cocoa Beach.

  3. Workers' Compensation Insurance must be active and current before pulling permits.
