Sewer/Water Licensing in Cocoa Beach city, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, any person who engages in the business of installing, constructing, repairing, or maintaining sewers or water systems must hold a license issued by the state. This includes both public and private systems. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, these activities fall under the definition of "construction" and are regulated trades. If you perform sewer or water work in Cocoa Beach, you must be licensed unless a specific exemption applies.

How to Get Licensed

Florida licenses sewer/water contractors through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Determine your classification: Sewer/water work typically requires either a General Contractor, Mechanical Contractor, or specialty license depending on scope.

  2. Meet qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate competency through:

  3. Work experience in the trade (exact years vary by license type)
  4. Passage of a state licensing exam covering Florida construction law and trade-specific knowledge
  5. A high school diploma or equivalent

  6. Apply with the state: Submit your application to the CILB through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Include proof of experience, exam results, and required fees.

  7. Obtain your license: Once approved, you receive a state construction license valid for 2 years.

Local Requirements

Cocoa Beach contractors must comply with requirements in the Cocoa Beach Municipal Code. Before starting any sewer or water work, check that code for local permitting requirements, inspection procedures, and any city-specific amendments to state law.

Permits: Contact the Cocoa Beach Building Department to pull local permits for your project. You will be required to show your state license as part of the permit application.

Brevard County may also have jurisdiction over certain water/sewer installations. Verify with the Building Department which authority has permitting power for your specific project location.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensing:

Work performed by unlicensed individuals outside these exemptions is illegal and exposes you to fines and penalties.
