Water Conditioning Licensing in Cocoa, Florida

Who Needs a License

Water conditioning work in Florida is regulated under the Construction Industries Licensing Law. Anyone performing water conditioning services—including installation, repair, or maintenance of water treatment systems—must hold a valid state license unless explicitly exempted.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "water conditioning" means treating water to remove or reduce impurities, minerals, or contaminants through mechanical, chemical, or physical means. This includes softening systems, filtration systems, reverse osmosis units, and similar equipment.

How to Get Licensed

Florida issues water conditioning licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. Follow these steps:

  1. Meet qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate competency through either (a) four years of practical experience in water conditioning work during the five years preceding application, or (b) completion of an approved trade school program plus additional experience.

  2. Pass the exam: You must pass the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board examination covering water conditioning practices, safety, and state law.

  3. Apply with the state board: Submit your application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of experience, exam passage, and required fees. The board processes state licenses; local governments do not issue the license itself.

  4. Maintain your license: Renew biennially and comply with continuing education requirements set by the state board.

Local Requirements

In Cocoa, you must also obtain a local occupational license from the City of Cocoa. Contact the Cocoa Building Department to determine current local licensing fees and any city-specific requirements.

Check the Cocoa Municipal Code for local amendments, permit requirements, and any city ordinances that may apply to water conditioning work beyond state law.

Before beginning work on any project in Cocoa, pull required construction permits through the Cocoa Building Department. Permit requirements depend on project scope and location.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensure:

Exemptions do not apply to commercial water conditioning services performed for customers.
