Sewer/Water Licensing in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates individuals and entities that design, install, repair, or maintain sewage and water systems. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "sewer contractor" and "water contractor" are defined trades requiring licensure. Work that constitutes regulated activity includes installation of septic systems, water treatment systems, potable water lines, and sewage conveyance systems.

However, not all work requires a state license. See exemptions below.

How to Get Licensed

Licensing is administered by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board under authority of Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Determine your license category. Florida issues licenses for Sewer Contractor, Water Contractor, and related specialties. Review Fla. Stat. § 489.105 to confirm which applies to your work.

  2. Meet qualification requirements. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate:

  3. Active experience in the trade (typically 4 years for sewer/water work)
  4. Competency through examination
  5. Financial responsibility (bonding)

  6. Apply to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. Submit proof of experience, pass the state licensing exam, and pay applicable fees. Contact the Board through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Division of Construction.

  7. Special certifications. If your work involves medical gas systems or medical gas piping, you must also obtain medical gas certification per Fla. Stat. § 489.1136.

Local Requirements

Permits and inspections are handled by the Indian Harbour Beach Building Department. Before beginning work on sewer or water systems within city limits, obtain a local building permit even if you hold a state contractor's license.

Consult the Indian Harbour Beach Municipal Code for any local amendments, additional design standards, or procedural requirements that apply within the city. Florida statutes set a floor; municipalities may impose stricter standards.

Contact the Indian Harbour Beach Building Department to confirm current local permit procedures and fees.

Exemptions

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from state licensing requirements:

Note: Even exempt work typically requires a local permit from the Indian Harbour Beach Building Department. Exemption from state licensure does not exempt you from local permitting.
