Plumbing Licensing in Tropical Park CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who engages in plumbing work in Florida must hold a valid license unless specifically exempted. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing is defined as the practice, business, or work of installing, repairing, extending, altering, or maintaining pipes, fittings, fixtures, appliances, and appurtenances in connection with water supply, drainage, gas piping, medical gas systems, or sewerage systems.

Work that requires a license includes installation of water lines, drainage systems, gas piping, and related fixtures. The scope applies regardless of whether the work is performed as a business or side work.

How to Get Licensed

Florida licenses plumbing contractors through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To obtain a license:

  1. Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires documented experience in plumbing work (typically four years for a Class B contractor or two years for a Class A contractor).

  2. Pass the state examination administered by the CILB covering plumbing code, safety, and practices.

  3. Apply to the CILB with proof of experience, examination scores, and required fees. The CILB is the state-level issuing authority; local municipalities do not issue plumbing licenses.

  4. Obtain a local permit from Tropical Park or Brevard County for each job. The permit process is separate from state licensure and involves local review of plans and inspections.

For specific application procedures and current exam schedules, contact the Construction Industry Licensing Board directly or visit the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation website.

Local Requirements

Tropical Park CDP is subject to Brevard County permitting and inspection requirements. Before beginning any plumbing work:

Contact the Tropical Park Building Department or Brevard County Building Department to confirm the correct permit authority for your specific project location.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, plumbing work performed by a homeowner on their own single-family residence is exempt from licensure requirements. Work performed by employees of a licensed contractor under the contractor's direct supervision may also qualify for exemptions in limited circumstances. Review § 489.103 for the complete list of exemptions, as they are narrow and specific.
