Engineering Licensing in Fort Lauderdale city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineers under the Construction Industry Licensing Board framework. If you perform engineering services in Fort Lauderdale—including design, consultation, inspection, or oversight of construction projects—you must hold a valid Florida professional engineer license.

The term "engineer" is legally defined and protected in Florida. Work that constitutes the practice of engineering and affects public safety, health, or welfare requires licensure under Fla. Stat. § 489.105.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
You must satisfy education and experience requirements set by Fla. Stat. § 489.113. Typically, this includes:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Four years of progressive, relevant engineering experience
- Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Passage of the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your engineering discipline

If you have relevant military training or education, you may receive credit under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Step 2: Apply to the Board
Submit your application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107). The Board reviews qualifications, verifies experience, and administers or approves exams.

Step 3: Pass Required Exams
You must pass both the FE and PE exams. The Board's procedures and exam standards are established under state statute.

Local Requirements

Permits and Building Department:
Contact the Fort Lauderdale Building Department for local permitting requirements and project-specific reviews. While professional licensure is state-controlled, Fort Lauderdale enforces local building codes and permit procedures.

Municipal Code:
Review the Fort Lauderdale Municipal Code for any local amendments, professional standards, or additional requirements for engineers working within city limits. Local ordinances may impose additional documentation, inspection, or notification requirements beyond state law.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 provides exemptions from licensure for certain limited activities. Exemptions may apply to employees of licensed professionals, certain government employees, or work below specified thresholds. Review the statute carefully to determine if your specific work qualifies for an exemption.
