Electrical Licensing in Hollywood city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Anyone performing electrical work in Hollywood must hold a valid Florida electrical license unless exempt. Licensed electrical work includes installation, alteration, repair, maintenance, and inspection of electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.[^1]
Florida law defines electrical contracting as work requiring a license under Fla. Stat. § 489.105. The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) regulates electrical contractors, journeyman electricians, and apprentices.[^2]
How to Get Licensed
State Licensing Process:
-
Determine your classification: Electrical Contractor, Journeyman Electrician, or Apprentice Electrician.[^1]
-
Meet qualifications:
- Electrical Contractor: Four years documented electrical experience or equivalent, or completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program plus two years experience.[^3]
- Journeyman Electrician: Four years documented electrical experience or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.[^3]
-
Apprentice: Enrollment in or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.[^3]
-
Exam requirement: Pass the CILB examination for your classification.[^2]
-
Apply through the CILB: Submit your application, qualifications documentation, exam results, and fees to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. Military training and education may provide credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.[^4]
-
Receive your license: Upon approval, the CILB issues your state electrical license.
Local Requirements
Electrical work in Hollywood city requires a local permit in addition to state licensure. Contact the Hollywood Building Department to obtain electrical permits before beginning work. Permit requirements and fees are established in the Hollywood Municipal Code.[^5]
Contractors must verify all local amendments and requirements in the Hollywood Municipal Code, as the city may impose additional standards beyond state law.
Exemptions
The following are exempt from licensure under Fla. Stat. § 489.103:
- Homeowners performing electrical work on their own single-family residence (certain limitations apply)
- Licensed electricians performing work within the scope of their license
- Persons installing or servicing low-voltage systems (alarm systems, communication systems) where exemptions are specifically provided by statute
- Maintenance work performed by the owner or lessor of a building on the owner's or lessor's property (certain restrictions apply)
