Electrical Licensing in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, or supervises the installation or construction of electrical systems in buildings or structures must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, electrical work is defined as the design, installation, maintenance, or repair of electrical systems, including wiring, equipment, and apparatus used to generate, transmit, or distribute electrical energy.

In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, all electrical work performed within town limits requires proper state licensure and local permitting. This includes residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

How to Get Licensed

Florida electrical licensing is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. There are two primary license classifications:

  1. Master Electrician: Requires four years of verifiable experience as a licensed electrician, passage of the Master Electrician examination, and proof of financial responsibility and workers' compensation insurance.

  2. Electrical Contractor: Requires four years of verifiable experience in electrical work, passage of the Electrical Contractor examination, and proof of financial responsibility and workers' compensation insurance.

Applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Fla. Stat. § 489.113, including citizenship or legal residency status, no disqualifying criminal convictions, and compliance with workers' compensation insurance requirements.

Military personnel may receive credit for relevant training and education under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Applications are submitted to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The state board reviews qualifications, administers examinations, and issues state licenses.

Local Requirements

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea requires that all electrical permits be obtained through the town before work begins. Contact the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Building Department to pull electrical permits and schedule inspections.

Review the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Municipal Code for town-specific electrical installation standards, permit fees, and inspection procedures that may exceed or supplement state requirements.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain limited electrical work is exempt from licensure, including minor maintenance and repair work performed by property owners on their own residential property. However, exemptions are narrow. Any work for compensation or on properties other than the owner's residence requires a valid license.
