Electrical Licensing in Lighthouse Point city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, alters, repairs, or maintains electrical systems in Lighthouse Point must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, this includes work on wiring, conduit, equipment, and appliances that are part of an electrical installation. Unlicensed electrical work is prohibited and subject to penalties.

How to Get Licensed

Florida electrical licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. There are three license classifications: Master Electrician, Certified Electrician, and Certified Electrician in Training.

Basic Requirements (Fla. Stat. § 489.113):
- Master Electrician: 8,000 hours of documented experience as a licensed electrician, or equivalent
- Certified Electrician: 4,000 hours of documented experience under a licensed electrician, or equivalent
- Certified Electrician in Training: Minimum qualifications vary; serves as apprenticeship pathway

All applicants must pass a Florida state licensing exam covering the National Electrical Code and Florida-specific regulations. You must apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

Military Credit: If you have relevant military training in electrical work, you may receive credit toward experience hours under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Review the municipal code for any local amendments to state electrical standards, permitting procedures, or contractor requirements that may exceed state minimums.

Exemptions

- Installation of electrical equipment by manufacturers in their own facilities
- Work performed by employees of electrical utilities on utility property
- Maintenance and repair by building owners on their own single-family residential property (limited scope)
- Other exemptions as defined in statute

Exemptions are narrow. When in doubt, obtain a license or consult the Building Department before beginning work.
