Engineering Licensing in North Lauderdale city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida regulates professional engineering through the Construction Industry Licensing Board. If you perform engineering services—including design, analysis, or professional consultation on construction projects—you must hold a state professional engineer (PE) license issued under Fla. Stat. § 489.113.

The state defines "practice of professional engineering" in Fla. Stat. § 489.105 as offering or providing professional services or creative work that requires engineering knowledge, judgment, and skill. This includes preparing plans, specifications, and estimates; inspecting construction; and certifying work compliance with plans and specifications.

Work that affects public safety, structural integrity, or health requires licensing. Not all construction-related work requires a PE license; certain exemptions apply (see Exemptions below).

How to Get Licensed

  2. Apply through the Construction Industry Licensing Board established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. Submit your application, transcripts, exam scores, and work experience documentation.

  3. Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, you may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131. Document your military service record with your application.

  4. Receive your license from the state. This is a state-issued credential; no separate local licensure is required.
