Engineering Licensing in Pompano Beach city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Professional engineering work in Florida requires licensure under state law. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 defines restricted practice: any person who offers to perform engineering services, or who prepares engineering plans, specifications, or reports for public or private clients, must hold a current Florida professional engineer (PE) license.
This includes designing buildings, infrastructure, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and other engineered works. The definition extends to any work commonly recognized as engineering practice, even if the title "engineer" is not used.
How to Get Licensed
State Application & Examination:
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board (established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107) does not issue professional engineering licenses. Engineering licensure is handled by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Board of Professional Engineers.
Applicants must meet Fla. Stat. § 489.113 qualifications:
- Hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Gain required years of practical engineering experience under a licensed PE
- Pass the Professional Engineering (PE) exam
Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements.
Apply directly to DBPR (not through local Pompano Beach offices). The state board administers all exams and credentials.
Local Requirements
Engineering permits and plan reviews in Pompano Beach are managed by the City of Pompano Beach Building Department. All engineering work subject to permitting must include sealed plans and calculations prepared by a Florida-licensed PE.
Review the Pompano Beach Municipal Code for local permitting requirements, plan submission standards, and any city-specific amendments to state engineering practice rules. Local amendments may impose additional documentation, inspection requirements, or design standards.
Contact the Pompano Beach Building Department to determine which permits apply to your specific engineering project and required submission procedures.
Exemptions
Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensure requirements, including:
- Work performed by employees of the U.S. government or state/local government on public projects (in limited circumstances)
- Teaching engineering in accredited institutions
- Certain technical work that does not constitute "practice of engineering"
Review § 489.103 in full; exemptions are narrowly defined and context-dependent.
