Engineering Licensing in Roosevelt Gardens CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates "contracting" work related to construction. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a "contractor" is defined as any person who undertakes to, offers to, or purports to construct, repair, or improve buildings or structures for others.

Engineering services themselves are regulated separately under Florida's Professional Engineers statute (not the contractor licensing board). However, if you are performing construction work—including design-build services or on-site construction supervision—you must hold the appropriate contractor license issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Construction Industry Licensing Board.

Work that does not require a contractor license is defined in Fla. Stat. § 489.103, such as certain owner-performed work on property you own.

How to Get Licensed

State Application and Exam:

  1. Apply to the DBPR Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107).
  2. Meet qualification requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which include:
  3. Appropriate classroom and practical experience in your contractor category
  4. A passing score on the state contractor licensing exam
  5. If you have relevant military training or education, you may claim credit under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Contact the Florida DBPR directly for current application procedures, exam schedules, and fees—requirements and processes change and must be verified with the state board.
