Electrical Licensing in Tamarac, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical work in Tamarac must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" means the design, installation, maintenance, or repair of electrical systems, equipment, and devices. This includes wiring, panels, outlets, lighting systems, and related installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

A license is required before you begin work. Unlicensed electrical work violates state law and may result in fines, stop-work orders, and civil liability.

How to Get Licensed

Florida electrical licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. There are three classifications: Journeyman Electrician, Master Electrician, and Electrical Contractor.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must have:
- Documented work experience (typically 8,000 hours for Journeyman; additional hours for Master)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- No disqualifying criminal convictions

If you have relevant military training or education, you may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Step 2: Apply with the State

Submit your application directly to the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Include proof of experience, education, and identification. There is an application fee.

Step 3: Pass the Examination

You must pass the Florida electrical licensing exam covering code, safety, and trade knowledge. Exam scheduling and content are managed by the state board.

Step 4: Receive Your License

Once approved, your license is valid statewide, including in Tamarac.
