Engineering Licensing in Charlotte Harbor CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires licensing for individuals who offer to perform or perform engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" means professional services requiring the application of engineering principles to public or private improvements, utilities, or structures.

Anyone advertising engineering services or signing engineering documents in Charlotte Harbor must hold an active Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state. This includes design work, plans, specifications, and professional opinions on engineering matters.

How to Get Licensed

Apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), not through local Charlotte Harbor authorities.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program (or equivalent per Fla. Stat. § 489.113)
- Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Four years of work experience under a licensed engineer (or equivalent education may reduce this requirement)
- Professional Engineer (PE) exam
- Pass the Florida state-specific exam or jurisprudence exam

Military credit: If you have relevant military training and education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward education and experience requirements. Submit military transcripts and documentation to DBPR.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, oversees the PE licensing process. Contact DBPR's Construction Industry Licensing Board for current application procedures, exam schedules, and fees.

Local Requirements

Permits and inspections in Charlotte Harbor are handled through the Charlotte County building permitting process (not a separate municipal department). Before beginning engineering work on any project, the contractor or owner must obtain permits through Charlotte County.

Review the Charlotte Harbor Municipal Code for any local amendments, development standards, or local engineering requirements specific to the community development district.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following do not require engineering licenses:
- Employees of licensed engineers acting under direct supervision
- Federal, state, and local government employees performing engineering work in their official capacity
- Work by contractors that does not constitute professional engineering (routine construction or maintenance)
