Electrical Licensing in Hernando CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who installs, maintains, alters, or repairs electrical systems in buildings or structures in Hernando CDP must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contracting" is defined as the planning, design, installation, alteration, maintenance, or repair of electrical systems. This applies to residential, commercial, and industrial work. A license is required before performing any of this work or offering such services to the public.
How to Get Licensed
Florida licenses electrical contractors through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under authority of Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:
-
Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: You must have relevant work experience (typically four years as an electrical contractor or equivalent), pass a state examination covering electrical code and practice, and demonstrate financial responsibility and good character.
-
Verify military credit eligibility if applicable. Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 permits credit for relevant military training and education toward experience requirements.
-
Apply through the state — contact the Construction Industry Licensing Board (part of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation) for application materials, current exam dates, and fees. The application will specify required documentation of experience.
-
Pass the electrical contractor examination, which tests knowledge of the Florida Building Code and electrical safety standards.
-
Obtain your license once approved. Your license must be maintained in good standing and renewed per state requirements.
Local Requirements
Hernando CDP is located in Citrus County, Florida. Before beginning work, you must obtain permits through the Citrus County Building Department (not the town directly, as Hernando is an unincorporated community).
Consult the Hernando Municipal Code for any county-specific amendments, additional local requirements, permit fees, or inspection protocols that apply to electrical work in the area. County regulations may impose additional safety or documentation standards beyond state law.
Exemptions
Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements:
- Homeowners performing work on their own single-family residence (not for hire)
- Maintenance work by employees of utilities, railroads, or telecommunications companies within their scope of employment
- Installation of equipment or fixtures that do not constitute part of the electrical system
- Low-voltage systems under 50 volts in certain circumstances
Exemptions are narrow. When in doubt, assume a license is required.
