Engineering Licensing in Homosassa CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
In Florida, any person who offers to perform or performs engineering services must hold an active license issued by the state. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means providing professional services or creative work that requires application of engineering principles and data. This includes designing structures, systems, or infrastructure; preparing engineering plans and specifications; and providing consultation on engineering matters.
If you are performing engineering work in Homosassa CDP, Citrus County, you must be licensed unless you fall within a recognized exemption (see below).
How to Get Licensed
Florida engineering licensure is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:
- Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires:
- Relevant education (typically a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program)
- Practical work experience under a licensed engineer
-
Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Professional Engineer (PE) exam
-
Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows you to petition for credit toward licensing requirements.
-
Apply to the state board through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which processes applications and administers exams.
The state board, not Homosassa or Citrus County, issues the license. Contact the DBPR for current exam schedules, fees, and application procedures.

Exemptions
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensing requirements:
- Work performed by public employees acting within the scope of their employment
- Certain routine or minor work that does not constitute engineering practice as defined by law
- Employees working under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer
- Specific categories of technical or specialized work that fall outside the legal definition of engineering practice
