Who Needs a License
Any person engaging in air conditioning work in Florida must hold a state license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "air conditioning contractor" means a person who engages in the business of installing, maintaining, servicing, or repairing air conditioning systems. This includes ductwork, refrigerant handling, and system design work.
Work that requires licensing includes:
- Installation of new HVAC systems
- Repair and maintenance of air conditioning equipment
- Replacement of compressors, evaporators, or condensers
- Refrigerant recovery and recycling
- Ductwork installation and modification

How to Get Licensed
Florida HVAC licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:

- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Provide proof of four years of hands-on experience in air conditioning work (or equivalent education/apprenticeship)

The state board processes applications and issues the license; Lecanto does not issue state contractor licenses.
