Engineering Licensing in Arcadia city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida requires licensure for individuals who offer or perform engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing or offering to perform services such as consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, design, or supervision of construction for any public or private entity, where the public welfare is affected.
If you design, plan, or oversee construction projects in Arcadia—whether buildings, infrastructure, or other works—you must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the state of Florida.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Fla. Stat. § 489.113 sets education and experience requirements. You must hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program and complete four years of relevant work experience under a licensed professional engineer. Military training and education may provide credit toward requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
Step 2: Apply to the Florida Board
The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, processes engineer licenses. Submit your application to the state board—not the city or county. The board verifies your education, experience, and qualifications.
Step 3: Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) Exam
You must pass the NCEES Professional Engineer Exam. Some applicants first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam before accumulating required experience.
Step 4: Receive Your License
Once approved, you receive your Florida PE license number, required to stamp and sign engineering documents and plans.
Local Requirements
Arcadia is located in DeSoto County, Florida. All engineering work in Arcadia is subject to state licensing requirements under the cited statutes.
Permits and Plan Review:
Contact the Arcadia Building Department to pull construction permits and submit engineered plans. They will verify that your PE-stamped documents comply with local codes.
Local Code:
Review the Arcadia Municipal Code for any local amendments, zoning requirements, or project-specific conditions that may apply to your engineering scope of work.
Exemptions
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, engineering licensure is NOT required for:
- Work performed by employees of the U.S. government or the state of Florida in their official capacity
- Certain routine or minor construction work that does not involve professional engineering judgment
- Installation and repair work by utility companies on their own systems
However, if you work as a consultant or independent practitioner in Arcadia, you almost certainly need a license.
