Electrical Licensing in Palm Coast, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who performs electrical work in Palm Coast must hold a Florida electrical license. Florida law defines electrical work as the design, installation, maintenance, repair, or alteration of electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, an "electrical contractor" is defined as a person who undertakes to, for another, perform electrical work. This includes both master electricians and electrician apprentices working under supervision. Work that requires licensing includes installing wiring, equipment, panels, outlets, switches, and any other electrical components in residential, commercial, or industrial settings.
How to Get Licensed
Electrical licensing in Florida is managed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.
Steps to obtain a license:
-
Determine your license class — Florida offers Master Electrician and Electrician licenses.
-
Meet experience requirements — Fla. Stat. § 489.113 sets qualifications for practice. Generally, applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience in the electrical trade. Military training and education may provide credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
-
Pass the state examination — The CILB administers exams covering electrical code, safety standards, and trade-specific knowledge. Contact the CILB directly through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) to register for exams and obtain current testing schedules.
-
Submit your application — File with the CILB through the DBPR. Include proof of experience, exam results, and required fees.
-
Receive your license — Once approved, your license authorizes you to perform electrical work in Florida.

However, exemptions are narrowly defined—most commercial work and work performed for compensation requires a full license.
