Engineering Licensing in Greensboro, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensing for individuals who offer to perform or who perform professional engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "professional engineering" means any service or creative work requiring professional engineering education, training, and experience in applying special knowledge of mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences to such professional services or creative work.

If you design structures, systems, or infrastructure for clients in Greensboro, you must hold a Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license. This applies whether you work as a sole proprietor, employee, or consultant.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Meet qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must hold a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program and have four years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed engineer.

  2. Military service credit: If you have relevant military training, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit for military education and experience toward licensing requirements.

  3. Apply to the state board: Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board, which governs professional engineers under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

  4. Pass the PE exam: You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, then the Professional Engineer (PE) exam after meeting experience requirements.

The state board processes applications and administers exams. You do not obtain a separate local license from Greensboro.
