Engineering Licensing in Port St. Joe, Florida
Who Needs a License
Florida law regulates professional engineers under Chapter 489, Florida Statutes. If you offer or perform engineering services in Port St. Joe—including design, analysis, consultation, or responsible charge of engineering work—you must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
The definition of "practice of engineering" under Fla. Stat. § 489.105 includes services that require application of engineering principles to public or private projects. Work that does not constitute the practice of engineering—such as certain construction, equipment operation, or routine maintenance—may not require licensure. However, when doubt exists about whether specific work requires licensing, consult the DBPR or your local authority.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must possess a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program and meet specific experience requirements (typically four years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed PE). Military training may provide credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
Step 2: Apply to DBPR. Submit your application, transcripts, and experience documentation to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. DBPR processes applications and determines eligibility.
Step 3: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Pass the FE exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
Step 4: Pass the Professional Engineer (PE) exam. After meeting experience requirements, pass the PE exam in your discipline (civil, mechanical, electrical, etc.).
Step 5: Receive your license. Upon passing both exams and meeting all qualifications, DBPR issues your PE license.
Fla. Stat. § 489.107 establishes the Construction Industry Licensing Board, which oversees licensure processes.
