Engineering Licensing in Wauchula city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Work that constitutes "construction" under Florida law requires licensing. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, construction includes planning, designing, supervising, managing, coordinating, and executing work involving the built environment.

If you perform engineering services—including design, analysis, or professional consultation on construction projects in Wauchula—you must hold the appropriate professional engineer license from the state of Florida. This applies regardless of project size or complexity.

How to Get Licensed

Florida does not issue construction licenses through local municipalities. Instead, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) administers professional engineer licensing under the Construction Industry Licensing Board framework established by Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Verify your qualifications against Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which sets education and experience requirements. Standard requirements include a four-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, four years of relevant experience under a licensed professional engineer, and passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Professional Engineer (PE) exam.

  2. Apply through DBPR at the state level—not through Wauchula city or Hardee County.

  3. Take required exams administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

  4. Military service credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements. Document your service record when applying.

Local Requirements

Once licensed by the state, you must comply with Wauchula's building permit and project approval process.

Permits and inspections are issued through the Wauchula city Building Department, not the state. Contact the Wauchula Building Department to determine which municipal code sections apply to your project and whether engineering plans must be stamped by a licensed professional engineer.

Refer to the Wauchula Municipal Code for local design standards, permit procedures, and any amendments to state requirements.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements, including:

However, engineering design and analysis work generally cannot be exempted. If you are selling services or managing complex projects, you must be licensed.
