Plumbing Licensing in Zolfo Springs, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who designs, installs, constructs, repairs, or maintains plumbing systems in Zolfo Springs must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. This includes work on water supply lines, drain systems, vents, and fixtures. Work involving medical gas piping also requires specific certification under Florida law.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "plumbing" is defined as the practice of installing, maintaining, altering, or repairing public or private water supply systems, materials, appurtenances, and appliances in connection with the supply and distribution of water and the removal and disposal of waterborne wastes.

How to Get Licensed

Florida regulates plumbing through the Construction Industry Licensing Board established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The Board issues plumber licenses at three levels: apprentice, journeyman, and master.

To become licensed:

  1. Meet experience requirements per Fla. Stat. § 489.113. Generally, you must document 10,000 hours of supervised plumbing work for journeyman or 12,000 hours for master level.

  2. Pass the state examination administered by the Board. Exams test knowledge of the Florida Building Code, plumbing theory, and safety standards.

  3. Apply through the Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of experience, exam scores, and the application fee. Applications are processed at the state level, not locally.

  4. If working with medical gas systems, obtain medical gas certification as required under Fla. Stat. § 489.1136.

Local Requirements

Zolfo Springs is located in Hardee County. Before beginning plumbing work, you must obtain a permit from the appropriate local building authority. Contact the Zolfo Springs Building Department or Hardee County Building Department to determine which jurisdiction has permitting authority for your project location and to pull the required permit.

Review the Zolfo Springs Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit fees, or additional requirements beyond state law. Local codes may impose inspections, bonding, or insurance requirements.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensing requirements, including minor repairs and maintenance by property owners on their own residences, and work by employees of manufacturers or suppliers on their own products. Review the statute for the complete list of exemptions; exemptions are narrow and specific.
