Engineering Licensing in Nobleton CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineering as a construction industry trade. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" means offering or performing services or work involving the application of engineering principles and data to the safeguarding of life, property, and public welfare. If you design, plan, or oversee construction projects in Nobleton that require engineering judgment—including structural, civil, mechanical, or electrical systems—you must hold a Florida professional engineer license.

Exemptions exist for certain work. Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts:
- Employees of licensed contractors performing work solely under direct supervision
- Work performed by utilities on their own property
- Certain minor alterations or maintenance that do not involve public safety

However, if you are self-employed, operate your own firm, or sign engineering plans and specifications, licensure is required.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Meet qualifications: Fla. Stat. § 489.113 requires a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program (4 years minimum), plus four years of professional experience under a licensed engineer, or equivalent combinations of education and experience.

  2. Obtain engineer-in-training (EIT) certification: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam administered by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

  3. Gain experience: Work under a licensed professional engineer for the required period.

  4. Pass the PE exam: Take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline.

  5. Apply to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (overseen under Fla. Stat. § 489.107): Submit your application, transcripts, work verification, and exam results through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Military training may qualify for credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.
