Electrical Licensing in Wiscon CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
Any person who undertakes to construct, repair, alter, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck, or demolish any electrical system or installation must hold a current Florida electrical license.[^1] This includes residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work. The state defines "electrical system" broadly to encompass wiring, equipment, appliances, and devices connected to a source of electrical power.[^2]
However, certain work is excluded from licensing requirements (see Exemptions section below).
How to Get Licensed
Florida issues electrical licenses through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which operates under Department of Business and Professional Regulation authority.[^3]
Step 1: Determine License Category
Applicants must qualify for one of three categories: Journeyman Electrician, Master Electrician, or Electrical Contractor. Each requires different experience and education combinations.[^4]
Step 2: Meet Experience Requirements
- Journeyman: 8,000 hours of documented electrical work experience under a licensed electrician or master electrician
- Master: 12,000 hours (including journeyman experience) plus 2 years as a journeyman
- Contractor: 24 months full-time management experience in electrical contracting[^4]
Step 3: Apply with CILB
Submit an application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of qualifying experience, education, and identification. The board will assign an examination date.
Step 4: Pass the Exam
Pass the applicable CILB written examination covering the National Electrical Code and Florida construction law.
Step 5: Obtain Local Permits
Once licensed, contact the Hernando County Building Department or the Wiscon CDP local authority to obtain required electrical work permits before beginning projects.
