Electrical Licensing in Cheval CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, maintains, or repairs electrical systems in Cheval CDP must hold an active Florida electrical license. This includes work on wiring, conduits, outlets, lighting, and related electrical infrastructure in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Florida law defines "electrical work" broadly under Fla. Stat. § 489.105 to include the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. If you are performing this work for compensation in Cheval CDP (Hillsborough County), you must be licensed.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications

You must satisfy one of the following under Fla. Stat. § 489.113:
- Completed an apprenticeship program and accrued the required hours of practical experience, or
- Worked under an active electrician's supervision for the specified number of hours in your classification

If you have relevant military training or education, you may receive credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131.

Step 2: Pass the Exam

Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The Board administers the state licensing exam. You must pass the examination covering Florida electrical code and practices.

Step 3: Obtain Your License

Submit your application to CILB with proof of experience, exam passage, and applicable fees. Upon approval, you receive your Florida electrical license.

Note: The CILB is a state board. While they issue the license, you must also comply with local permitting requirements in Cheval CDP.

Local Requirements

Electrical work in Cheval CDP is subject to local permitting and inspection. Consult the Cheval Municipal Code for local amendments, permit requirements, and inspection procedures specific to Cheval CDP.

Contact the Cheval Building Department to determine:
- Where to pull electrical permits (city or county)
- Required documentation for permit application
- Inspection requirements before work commences and upon completion

Hillsborough County may also impose requirements; verify with both the local municipality and county when planning electrical work.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensing:
- Emergency repairs necessary for immediate safety
- Maintenance of existing systems by the building owner or occupant (limited scope)
- Low-voltage systems (under 50 volts) in some cases

However, exemptions are narrowly construed. If you are performing electrical work for compensation, you almost certainly need a license. Do not assume your work qualifies for an exemption without reviewing the statute.
