Engineering Licensing in Lutz CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain limited activities, including routine supervision of construction and minor alterations that don't affect structural integrity or public safety. However, when in doubt about whether your work requires licensure, obtain a PE license to avoid legal liability.

How to Get Licensed

Florida regulates engineering through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become a licensed Professional Engineer:

  1. Education & Experience: Meet the requirements in Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which typically requires:
  2. A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, plus 4 years of work experience under a licensed engineer, OR
  3. A non-ABET degree plus 8 years of relevant experience
  4. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are evaluated case-by-case

  5. Military Credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements. Document your military service record.

  6. Exams: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, then the Professional Engineer (PE) exam for your discipline.

  7. Apply: Submit your application and documentation directly to the CILB (part of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation). The board processes applications and administers exams.
