Burials; depth of graves; removal of excess dirt; number of interments

Section: 8-12

(a)

All burials in city-operated cemeteries shall be in concrete vaults with the exception of cremains vaults, which can be either granite, or concrete, marble, or other impermeable material. All full body graves must be dug not less than five (5) feet deep shall be well closed up, even with ground level and shall be well packed. Cremains vaults shall be dug not less than eighteen (18) inches deep. Such graves shall be staked out and designated in some manner for identification. The funeral home or vault or monument company shall be responsible for the removal, from the cemetery, of all excess dirt the same day as the burial.

(b)

The interment or inurnment of human remains in a mausoleum or other above ground structure shall be permitted if there is compliance with all the requirements of section 8-8.

(c)

Only three (3) interments will be allowed per space. There may be three (3) cremains or alternatively, one (1) full burial and two (2) cremains interred or inurned in a single space. Interments, inurnments, disinterments and disinurnments into the same space, within a vault(s) shall only be allowed if the following occurs:

(1)

Copy of deed or other proof of ownership is produced.

(2)

A signed interment, disinterment authorization is signed and on file with the parks and recreation department to assume full legal and or financial responsibility for the burial.

(3)

Vault/vaults must have the following permanent signage engraved or secured to the outside of said vault:

Within this vault lies:

Name, date of birth and date of death (in casket).

Name, date of birth and date of death (outside of casket).

(4)

When more than one person is buried in or on top of one (1) space (cremation and or casket interment) a permanent marker/memorial or mausoleum shall be installed, engraved with all names and dates of birth and death, of those buried in that space and all spaces of other family members within the same lot. An original invoice for the marker or mausoleum engraving shall be submitted prior to burial.
