Sewer/Water Licensing in South Beach CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

In Florida, any person who contracts to construct, repair, or maintain public or private water and sewer systems must hold a contractor's license unless exempted by law. Work includes installation, alteration, or repair of water mains, sewer lines, treatment facilities, and related infrastructure. The state defines this work under the Construction Industry Licensing Board's regulatory scope.

According to Fla. Stat. § 489.105, a "contractor" means any person who undertakes to, offers to, purports to, or agrees to build, construct, contract, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck, or demolish any building or structure or improvement to real property for a fixed price, commission, time, materials, or other consideration.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board, a state-level board established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The board does not accept applications directly; applicants must work through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Step 2: Meet qualification requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.113. You must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have the required experience in sewer and water work (typically 4 years of verifiable experience for general contractors)
- Pass the state contractor exam specific to water/sewer work
- Provide proof of workers' compensation insurance and liability insurance

Step 3: Submit your application through DBPR with documentation of experience, exam results, and financial responsibility proof.

Step 4: Obtain a state license number. This license is statewide and valid in South Beach CDP.
