Engineering Licensing in Marianna city, Florida
Who Needs a License
Professional engineering work in Marianna is regulated by Florida state law. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" is defined as offering or providing public service, or performing public work, in connection with utilities, structures, machines, processes, or devices. If you design, plan, or supervise construction projects in Marianna, you likely need state licensure.
However, Fla. Stat. § 489.103 provides exemptions. Employees of licensed engineers are exempt when acting under the direct supervision of that licensed engineer. Contractors performing construction work are also exempt from engineering licensure—they must hold their own construction license instead. Employees performing work solely for their employer are exempt. If your work falls into one of these categories, you may not need an engineering license.
How to Get Licensed
Florida engineering licensure is issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. You must meet qualifications under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires:
- A degree in engineering from an accredited program
- Documented engineering experience (typically 4+ years under a licensed engineer)
- Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
- Passage of the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in your discipline
If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements.
Apply directly to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The state board, not local government, issues engineer licenses. You do not apply through Marianna city government for your state license.
Local Requirements
Once licensed by the state, you must comply with local permit and code requirements when performing work in Marianna. Contact the Marianna Building Department to determine which permits are required for your specific project. The city enforces the Marianna Municipal Code; review the current code at https://library.municode.com/fl/marianna for any local amendments, design standards, or additional local requirements that apply to engineering work within city limits.
Jackson County may also have jurisdiction depending on project location. Confirm whether the site falls within city or county limits.
Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103:
- Employees of licensed engineers working under direct supervision
- Contractors holding construction licenses
- Employees performing work solely for their employer
- Certain work on utilities and infrastructure may have additional exemptions—consult the statute for your specific situation
