Engineering Licensing in Buckingham CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensing for individuals who offer or perform professional engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "engineering" means any service or creative work performed by a professional engineer that involves the application of engineering principles and data to provide consultation, design, specifications, plans, or other professional services.

Work that triggers licensing requirements includes design of structures, systems, or infrastructure; preparation of engineering plans and specifications; and consultation on construction projects. If you are offering these services to the public in Buckingham or anywhere in Florida, you must hold a current Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.

How to Get Licensed

Florida licenses professional engineers through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107).

Steps:

  1. Meet qualifications under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires:
  2. A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program, or equivalent
  3. Four years of progressive, practical engineering experience under a licensed professional engineer
  4. Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  5. Passage of the Professional Engineer (PE) exam

  6. Apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which administers licensing on behalf of the Construction Industry Licensing Board.

  7. Submit proof of education, experience, and exam passage.

If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides credit toward experience or education requirements—request evaluation during your application.
