Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, repairs, or maintains plumbing systems in Gateway CDP must hold a valid Florida plumbing license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, plumbing work is defined as the installation, maintenance, and repair of pipes, fixtures, and appliances for water supply, drainage, and gas systems within buildings and structures.

How to Get Licensed

Florida plumbing licenses are issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Step 1: Meet qualifications. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must demonstrate competency through documented work experience, apprenticeship, or technical training in plumbing. Specific hour requirements vary by license classification (journeyman, master, etc.).

Step 2: Pass the CILB examination. You must pass the state-administered plumbing exam covering Florida Building Code requirements, safety standards, and trade practices.

Step 3: Apply through CILB. Submit your application directly to the Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of experience, exam passage, and any required fees. The CILB manages all state-level licensing.

Step 4: Obtain local authorization. Once licensed by the state, contact the Gateway CDP or Lee County Building Department to activate your license for work within the jurisdiction and pull permits for individual projects.
