Engineering Licensing in Whiskey Creek CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires licensure for individuals who offer to perform or perform professional engineering services. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing or offering to perform services in connection with the investigation, evaluation, planning, design, or inspection of construction, or the supervision of construction for the purpose of assuring compliance with the plans and specifications.

Work that involves designing structures, systems, or infrastructure; certifying plans; or providing engineering oversight requires a Professional Engineer (PE) license from the state. Unlicensed engineering practice is prohibited under Fla. Stat. § 489.113.

How to Get Licensed

The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, issues PE licenses. To qualify:

  1. Education & Experience: Meet the qualifications in Fla. Stat. § 489.113, which requires a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program plus relevant work experience under a licensed engineer.

  2. Military Credit: If you have relevant military training and education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience requirements.

  3. Apply with the State Board: Submit your application to the Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of education, experience, and passing the Professional Engineering Exam (PE Exam).

  4. Pass the PE Exam: You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gain required experience, then pass the PE exam in your discipline.

The state board issues the license; it is not issued by the town.
