Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, constructs, or supervises the installation or construction of electrical systems in buildings or structures must hold a valid Florida electrical license.[^1] This includes work on wiring, equipment, and apparatus used for generation, transmission, transformation, or utilization of electrical energy in buildings and other structures.[^1]

The requirement applies regardless of whether the work is performed for compensation or as part of employment. However, certain limited activities fall outside the licensing requirement—see Exemptions below.

How to Get Licensed

1. Meet qualifications: Demonstrate 8,000 hours of documented, practical work experience in electrical construction under a licensed electrician, with specific training requirements in safety and code compliance.[^3]

2. Pass the examination: Take and pass the Florida electrical contractor or electrician exam administered by the CILB.[^3]

3. Apply to CILB: Submit an application to the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board with proof of experience, exam passage, and any required fees.[^2]

4. Military service credit: If you have relevant military training and education in electrical work, you may receive credit toward the experience requirement.[^4] Submit documentation of your military service record with your application.

The CILB does not process local applications; all licensing is handled at the state level. Once licensed, you are authorized to work statewide, including in Capitola CDP.

Local Requirements

Permits: Before beginning any electrical work in Capitola CDP, contact the Leon County Building Department to obtain a required electrical permit. Capitola CDP is unincorporated and falls under Leon County jurisdiction for permitting and code enforcement.
