Engineering Licensing in Capitola CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates professional engineers under Chapter 489, Florida Statutes. Work that requires an engineering license includes designing structures, systems, and infrastructure projects, and offering or providing engineering services to the public.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "practice of engineering" means performing services or work requiring professional knowledge and skill in applied mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering principles. If your work falls within this definition and you are offering services in Capitola CDP, you must hold an active Florida engineering license.

Certain work is exempt. Fla. Stat. § 489.103 excludes employees of the federal, state, or local government performing their official duties; work performed by licensed contractors within their trade scope; and routine maintenance or repair that does not require design or professional judgment.

How to Get Licensed

Florida engineering licensure is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Steps:

  1. Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: Hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent), complete required years of responsible charge experience (typically 4 years minimum under direct supervision of a licensed engineer), and document work experience in detail.

  2. Apply with the state board at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Submit proof of education, work experience record, and references.

  3. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam if you have not already.

  4. Pass the Professional Engineering (PE) exam in your discipline.

  5. Receive your license from the state upon exam passage and final board approval.

Military service and training may provide credit toward experience requirements under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131—document any military engineering training when applying.
