Water Conditioning Licensing in Capitola CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida regulates water conditioning as a construction trade. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "water conditioning" means equipment or systems designed to treat, soften, purify, or otherwise condition water for residential or commercial use.

If you install, maintain, repair, or contract to perform water conditioning work in Capitola CDP, you must hold a valid state license. This applies whether you work as a sole proprietor, partnership, or corporation.

How to Get Licensed

State Licensing:

The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) issues water conditioning licenses. Per Fla. Stat. § 489.107, the Board administers licensing and enforcement.

To qualify for licensure under Fla. Stat. § 489.113:

  1. Experience requirement: You must have four years of experience in water conditioning work during the five years preceding application, or equivalent documented training.
  2. Examination: Pass the CILB water conditioning examination.
  3. Application: Submit your application through the CILB (visit the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) website for the current application process, fees, and exam scheduling).
  4. Financial responsibility: Demonstrate ability to respond to claims (surety bond or letter of credit requirements apply).

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Florida or registered to do business in the state.

Local Requirements

Capitola CDP permits:

Contact the Leon County Building Department (which administers permitting for Capitola CDP) to determine whether a separate local trade license or permit is required before beginning work. Leon County may require you to register or pull a county trade license even with a valid state license.

Municipal Code Review:

Refer to the Capitola Municipal Code for any local amendments, additional bonding requirements, or operational restrictions specific to water conditioning contractors. Given Capitola's small population (247), local ordinances may impose specific conditions on contractor operations or water system modifications.

If you sell water conditioning equipment but do not install or service it, you may not need a construction license—consult the CILB to confirm your specific business model.
