Engineering Licensing in Andrews CDP, Florida
Who Needs a License
In Florida, persons who offer to perform or perform engineering services must hold an active professional engineer (PE) license issued by the state. Engineering work is defined under Fla. Stat. § 489.105 and includes design, consultation, and responsible charge of construction projects where public safety depends on engineering judgment.
However, not all engineering-related work requires licensure. Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain activities, including work performed by employees of licensed engineers under direct supervision, routine inspections and repairs, and maintenance of existing structures that do not involve design or new construction decisions requiring professional judgment.
How to Get Licensed
Florida engineering licensure is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. To become licensed:
-
Meet qualifications per Fla. Stat. § 489.113: You must satisfy education and experience requirements set by the board. Typically, this includes a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program and relevant work experience under a licensed engineer.
-
Apply to the board through Florida's official licensing portal. The board sets application fees and processes credentials.
-
Pass the Professional Engineer exam administered by the board.
-
Military credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward licensing requirements. Submit documentation with your application.
Contact the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board for current exam schedules, application deadlines, and fee information.
Local Requirements
Andrews CDP is located in Levy County, Florida. Building permits and engineering plan reviews are issued at the Levy County Building Department, not a municipal office, as Andrews is an unincorporated community.
Consult the Andrews Municipal Code for any local amendments or additional design standards that may apply to projects in the CDP. Local code may impose additional review or approval steps beyond state licensing.
Contact the Levy County Building Department to determine whether your specific project requires local permits and what engineering documentation must accompany permit applications.
Exemptions
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, exemptions include:
- Work by employees of licensed engineers acting under their direct supervision
- Routine maintenance and repairs not involving design
- Work on single-family residences (with limitations)
- Certain utility company operations
However, exemptions are narrow. When in doubt whether your work requires a PE license, consult the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board or your local building department.
