Electrical Licensing in Ocala Estates CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who performs electrical work in Ocala Estates CDP must hold a valid Florida electrical license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical work" is defined as the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment. This includes wiring, fixtures, panels, transformers, and related apparatus in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) regulates electrical contractors, and work cannot legally commence without proper licensure.

How to Get Licensed

Florida issues three classes of electrical licenses:

  1. Master Electrician — requires a minimum of 8,000 hours of work experience as a licensed electrician over at least 4 years, plus passage of the Master Electrician exam.

  2. Certified Electrician — requires a minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience over at least 2 years, plus passage of the Certified Electrician exam.

  3. Licensed Electrician — requires a minimum of 8,000 hours of work experience over at least 4 years, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, plus passage of the Licensed Electrician exam.

Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate qualifications for practice and meet experience and examination requirements established by CILB. For military service credit, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows relevant military training and education to be counted toward experience hours.

Applications are submitted to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which oversees CILB. Applicants must pass the state exam and provide documentation of work experience before a license is issued.
