HVAC Licensing in Ocala city, Florida

Who Needs a License

Any person who installs, repairs, or maintains air conditioning or heating equipment in Ocala must hold a valid Florida HVAC contractor license. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, an HVAC contractor is defined as one who performs work on heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems. This includes installation, service, repair, and maintenance of central air conditioning, heat pumps, and related equipment.

Employees working under a licensed contractor's supervision must also be licensed as HVAC technicians unless they fall under a specific exemption.

How to Get Licensed

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, applicants must demonstrate competency through either:
- 4 years of experience as an HVAC technician under a licensed contractor, or
- 2 years experience plus completion of a vocational program in HVAC

Step 2: Pass the Exam
You must pass the HVAC contractor exam administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107. The exam tests knowledge of Florida building codes, safety standards, and HVAC systems.

Step 3: Apply to the State
Submit your application, proof of experience, exam results, and fees to the CILB (a division of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation). Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Step 4: Register Locally in Ocala
Once licensed by the state, you must register your business with the Ocala city government before operating. Contact the Ocala Building Department for local registration requirements and fees.

Local Requirements

Permits for HVAC work in Ocala are issued by the Ocala Building Department. Before beginning any HVAC installation, replacement, or major repair, you must obtain a mechanical permit from the city.

The Ocala Municipal Code governs local permitting, inspection, and code compliance. Contractors should review the current code for any local amendments or additional standards beyond state law.

Contact the Ocala Building Department to confirm current local fees, required documentation, and inspection procedures.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensing:
- Employees of the owner performing work on that owner's property
- Manufacturers installing their own equipment
- Work performed on equipment not considered an HVAC system under state definition

Contractors should verify specific exemptions with the CILB before assuming work is exempt.
