Engineering Licensing in The Villages CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida regulates professional engineers under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, which defines the practice of engineering as offering or providing services involving the application of engineering principles to public or private improvements. Any person offering engineering services in The Villages CDP must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license unless specifically exempted.

Work requiring licensure includes designing structures, systems, and infrastructure; preparing engineering plans and specifications; and certifying that work conforms to approved plans. The scope is broad and includes most construction-related engineering services.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Meet Qualifications: Per Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must hold a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program (or equivalent), complete required work experience under a licensed engineer, and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Professional Engineer (PE) exam.

  2. Apply to the State Board: The Construction Industry Licensing Board (Fla. Stat. § 489.107) administers professional engineer licenses. Apply directly to the state board—not The Villages or Marion County. Specific application procedures, exam schedules, and fees are available through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

  3. Military Credit: If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 provides credit toward experience and education requirements. Document your military service record when applying.

Local Requirements

The Villages CDP operates under Marion County jurisdiction. Before performing engineering work, you must comply with local permitting requirements. Contact the Marion County Building Department or The Villages Building Department to determine which jurisdiction issues permits for your specific project.

Review The Villages Municipal Code for any local amendments or additional requirements beyond state law. Local codes may impose additional design standards, approval processes, or inspections specific to The Villages CDP.

Exemptions

Fla. Stat. § 489.103 exempts certain work from licensure:

Review Fla. Stat. § 489.103 carefully to confirm whether your specific work qualifies for an exemption.
