Sewer/Water Licensing in Rio CDP, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law regulates water and sewer work as construction contracting. Any person who contracts to construct, repair, or maintain public or private water and sewer systems in Rio CDP must hold a Florida Construction Industry License.[^1] This includes installation, alteration, and maintenance of potable water systems, wastewater treatment systems, and associated piping and infrastructure.[^2]

Work that merely supplies materials, provides labor under direct supervision of a licensed contractor, or involves routine maintenance by property owners may fall outside licensing requirements, but the distinction depends on specific circumstances.[^3]

How to Get Licensed

State Licensing Process:

  1. Determine your license category. Florida recognizes different classes for water and sewer work; determine which applies to your scope of work under Fla. Stat. § 489.105.[^2]

  2. Meet experience and education requirements. Fla. Stat. § 489.113 requires proof of four years of experience in the trade or equivalent education/apprenticeship. Applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility and good moral character.[^4]

  3. Pass the state exam. Apply through the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), which administers examinations covering Florida construction law, safety practices, and trade-specific competency.[^1]

  4. Submit application to CILB. Include proof of experience, examination passage, workers' compensation insurance, and liability insurance. The board reviews and issues the license if all requirements are met.[^1]
