Engineering Licensing in El Portal, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida requires licensure for individuals who engage in the practice of engineering. Under Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "the practice of engineering" means performing or offering to perform engineering services or work, including consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, design, or supervision of construction for public or private clients.

If you design structures, systems, or infrastructure in El Portal or provide engineering services to clients in the village, you must hold a valid Florida engineering license.

How to Get Licensed

Florida engineering licensure is administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under Fla. Stat. § 489.107.

Step 1: Meet Qualifications
Under Fla. Stat. § 489.113, you must:
- Hold a degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Complete the required years of work experience under a licensed engineer (typically 4 years for degree holders)
- Satisfy other prescribed qualifications

Step 2: Military Credit
If you have relevant military training or education, Fla. Stat. § 489.1131 allows credit toward experience and education requirements. Document your military service record when applying.

Step 3: Apply with the State
Submit your application directly to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which oversees the Construction Industry Licensing Board. You will need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and the Professional Engineering (PE) exam for your discipline.

Step 4: Obtain Local Permits
Once licensed, contact the El Portal Building Department to pull required permits before beginning any engineering work in the village.

Local Requirements

El Portal operates under the El Portal Municipal Code. You must consult the El Portal Municipal Code for any local amendments, permit procedures, or additional requirements specific to the village beyond state licensing law.

All permitting and inspections for engineering work in El Portal are coordinated through the village Building Department. Contact them directly for current local procedures, permit fees, and documentation requirements.

Exemptions

Under Fla. Stat. § 489.103, certain work is exempt from licensure, including:
- Engineering work performed by full-time employees for their employer
- Certain routine or minor work that does not constitute practice of engineering as defined in the statute

Review the statute to determine if your specific work falls within an exemption.
