Contractor Licensing in Florida City, Florida

Who Needs a License

Florida law requires licensing for individuals who contract to build, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, improve, move, wreck, or demolish buildings or structures, or who offer to perform such work [Fla. Stat. § 489.105]. This applies to contractors in Florida City regardless of project value or complexity.

The Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates three main contractor classifications: General Contractor, Building Contractor, and Specialty Contractor [Fla. Stat. § 489.107]. If your work falls under one of these categories, you must be licensed before performing work or entering into contracts in Florida City.

How to Get Licensed

  1. Determine your contractor classification based on the type of work you perform [Fla. Stat. § 489.105].

  2. Meet qualification requirements, which include:

  3. Four years of work experience in the construction trade relevant to your classification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience [Fla. Stat. § 489.113]
  4. Proof of financial responsibility
  5. Compliance with workers' compensation and liability insurance requirements

  6. Pass the state examination administered by the Construction Industry Licensing Board [Fla. Stat. § 489.111]. You must demonstrate knowledge of Florida construction law, building codes, and trade-specific practices.

  7. Apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board in Tallahassee. Your application must include documentation of experience, exam results, and proof of insurance.

  8. Obtain a city permit from the Florida City Building Department before beginning work. A state license alone does not authorize work in Florida City.

Local Requirements

Florida City enforces building and contractor regulations through the Florida City Municipal Code, available at https://library.municode.com/fl/florida_city. Contractors must review this code for any local amendments, permitting procedures, or additional requirements beyond state law that apply within city limits.

Contact the Florida City Building Department to determine specific permit requirements, fees, and inspection schedules for your project. Local amendments may impose stricter standards than state law.

Exemptions

The following are exempt from Florida contractor licensing [Fla. Stat. § 489.103]:

Exemptions do not eliminate the need for local building permits in Florida City.
