Who Needs a License
Any person engaging in the business of installing, constructing, altering, servicing, or repairing electrical equipment and wiring in buildings, structures, and premises must hold a valid Florida electrical license. This applies to work on power generation, distribution, transmission, and use of electrical energy in structures.
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.105, "electrical contractor" means any person who undertakes to, offers to, or does install, construct, alter, service, or repair electrical equipment and wiring. Work performed must comply with the National Electrical Code and Florida Building Code standards.
How to Get Licensed
State Licensing Authority: The Construction Industry Licensing Board, established under Fla. Stat. § 489.107, administers electrical licensing in Florida.
Application Process:
1. Apply through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), Construction Industry Licensing Board
2. Submit proof of qualifications meeting Fla. Stat. § 489.113 standards
3. Pass the state electrical contractor exam
4. Provide evidence of workers' compensation insurance and liability insurance
Experience and Education Requirements (per Fla. Stat. § 489.113):
- Minimum 4 years of verifiable electrical work experience, OR
- Equivalent combination of apprenticeship, classroom hours, and on-the-job training
- Military training and education may count toward experience under Fla. Stat. § 489.1131
Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of electrical codes, safety practices, and business law through examination.
Local Requirements
Permits and inspections in Miami city are administered by the Miami Building Department.
Before beginning electrical work, contractors must obtain a building permit from the city. Contact the Miami Building Department for permit applications, fees, and inspection scheduling.

Exemptions
Per Fla. Stat. § 489.103, the following are exempt from licensure:
- Employees of licensed electrical contractors performing work under direct supervision
- Persons installing or maintaining their own single-family residential structure
- Farmers installing or maintaining electrical systems solely for agricultural use on their own property
- Certain utility company employees performing work within their corporate scope
Exemptions do not apply to work performed for compensation or profit.
