Designation of officer in charge of investigations

Section: 42-5

The officer in charge of any investigation mentioned in section 42-4 shall be the officer first arriving at the scene of such crime or homicide, or, in the event of two or more officers arriving simultaneously, then the officer senior in rank. Such officer assuming charge shall continue in charge until;

(1)

If the crime is that of a homicide, rape or wounding of another, the arrival on the scene of the sheriff of the county, the investigator of the state attorney's office, or a member of the homicide bureau (squad) of the city police department. Any one of such officers, upon arrival, shall assume charge of such investigation.

(2)

In the event that such crime being investigated is other than a homicide, rape or wounding of another, until the arrival of the sheriff or his/her deputy or of a ranking detective officer of the city, who shall assume and take charge of the investigation.
